Our History
Down Syndrome Innovations was founded in 1984 by two families who shared a vision: to support families experiencing the birth of a child with Down syndrome. Like all loving parents, they wanted their children to thrive, growing up happy, healthy, encouraged, and empowered within a strong and supportive community.
We were incorporated in 1986 and received our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 1987. Over the past 42 years, we have developed a proven portfolio of comprehensive programs and services that create positive outcomes for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the professionals who serve them. Many of our programs are now replicated by Down syndrome organizations across the United States.
Founded as the Down Syndrome Guild of Kansas City, the organization took a major step forward in 2017 by merging with First Downs for Down Syndrome, unifying two strong missions and cultures around a shared focus on life-changing services. In 2021, powered by a visionary board, dedicated team, and generous community, we rebranded as Down Syndrome Innovations to reflect our expanded lifespan services and moved into our state-of-the-art campus.
Today, Down Syndrome Innovations is recognized as one of the world's leading Down syndrome organizations. Through personalized, high-impact support spanning birth through adulthood, we empower individuals with Down syndrome to reach their full potential, and we are honored to be a trusted partner on that journey.
