CAREGIVER EDUCATION

We’ve served thousands of families and know individuals with Down syndrome thrive when parents are informed, intentional, and proactive. We provide ongoing group education and personalized planning support, covering financial planning, skill-building at home, advocacy, and public benefits, offered in Mission, Kansas, across the KC metro, and virtually worldwide.

OUR SUPPORTS

  • Each year, Down Syndrome Innovations offers approximately 20 caregiver education events, with intentional selection of speakers, strategic scheduling, and various location offerings and delivery methods.  On-site educational events provide time for meaningful caregiver connection, while virtual offerings allow for ease of access.  Speakers may offer informational presentations, facilitate round table discussions, or give a workshop setting for task completion and practical support.  Topics may include, but are not limited to: mental health and caregiver resiliency, financial planning, ABLE accounts, communication skills,  preparing for employment, functional fitness, navigating the medical journey, and much more.

  • Long-Term Planning Consultations offer individualized support to parents/caregivers to better prepare for adulthood. Tasks and exercises may include contacting your local community developmental disabilities organization (CDDO); applying for public funding; accessing local ID/DD services and supports; learning about supported decision making; and defining action steps towards long-term goals. Our Lifespan Service Team will help you prioritize and plan according to your loved one’s age, county of residence, and family context.

  • The Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities, in partnership with Down Syndrome Innovations, hosts the annual SPEAK Up! (Self-Advocates Promoting Empowerment and Access in Kansas) conference, a free event designed for self-advocates and caregivers.  It’s an empowering day featuring inspiring keynotes, interactive workshops, and thought-provoking discussions led by advocates, activists, and topical experts, including our own Down Syndrome Innovations team members.
